Vessela Tcherneva

Deputy Director of the ECFR and Director of the Sofia Office
Vessela Cherneva is Deputy Director of the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECtHR) and Head of the Sofia Office. Its focus is on the foreign policy of the EU, the Western Balkans and the Black Sea.

From 2010 to 2013, Cherneva was a spokeswoman for the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a member of the political cabinet of Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov.

She previously served as secretary of the International Commission on the Balkans, chaired by former Italian Prime Minister Giuliano Amato and former German President Richard von Weizsäcker.

She has been the editor-in-chief of Foreign Policy Bulgaria since its inception in 2005.

From 2000 to 2003 Cherneva worked as a political secretary at the Bulgarian Embassy in Washington, USA.

Vessela Cherneva holds a Master's degree in Political Science from the University of Bonn, Germany.
